Mortice Locks
Mortice locks are the minimum standard of security that many insurance companies will accept, and they come in either two, three or five lever varieties. Security and cost-wise, only five-lever locks should be fitted, and the lock must conform to BS 3621. Mortice locks can be fitted either with or without a handle. If fitted with a handle, the door has to be unlocked with a key, and then opened with the handle. This is called a “Sashlock”.
If fitted without a handle, the door can only be opened using the key; these are called “Deadlocks”. Mortice locks are sometimes erroneously referred to as “Chubb Locks”; while Chubb do manufacture them, they are not the only company that do.
